I ended up (via suggestion of Office Santa) putting the doors on the bottom to cover up the ugly gray part. Mr. Litelysalted came in and drilled a cord-hole in the back, and I put my scanner on the bottom and my software manuals, pantone books and photography/font catalogs on the upper shelf. It looks half decent.
